A reissue of the sold out cassette from 2019, this split between two Portland experimental artists feels like a natural extension of a sonic space the two have been circling for years.
Most known for his experimentation in crafting lovingly warped tape loops and ambient guitar work that rings out with an emotional clarity even when it is processed beyond recognition, Randall Taylor brings some of his most abstract work to the table with a track like "ASTRAL" and hits squarely in the chest with the heartbreaking "DISMANTLED".
AMULETS is joined by drowse - Kyle Bates's long running experimental slowcore project. drowse's songs are known for stitching together heavy shoegaze guitars and deconstructed ambient passages that glow with a pale gray light with heavy subject matter that delve into unflinching personal accounts of mental health and loss.
A lot of life has happened between the years this album was released. We are honored to bring this hard to find cassette back into the lives of old fans and introduce new ones.

This release is largely composed from guts and scraps of the album Light Mirror. “Wind Through the Door” and “Hidden Close” were the two initial pieces recorded for that album, while “A Song I Made In 2001 With My Friend Who is Now Dead (Director’s Cut)” is the original version of the Light Mirror song of the same name. “Your Breath is Wind” is a newer experiment that extends the “air” theme present in all of these songs. Heavy use of a field recorder is another thread–listen intently to unravel more.

“Wind Through the Door,” “Hidden Close,” and “A Song a Made in 2001 With My Friend Who is Now Dead (Director’s Cut)” were written and recorded by Kyle Bates at NES artist residency in Skagaströnd, Iceland in April 2018 as part of the Light Mirror sessions and compiled and completed at home in NE Portland in July 2019. “Your Breath is Wind” was written and recorded during the summer of 2019 at home in NE Portland.
Sections of field recorded conversations with Andy and Betty Bates were used on “Wind Through the Door” and “A Song I Made In 2001 With My Friend Who is Now Dead (Director’s Cut).”
Cassette recordings of Miles Avila-Crump can be heard on “A Song I Made In 2001 With My Friend Who is Now Dead (Director’s Cut).”
A pedal sent as a gift by Tomohide Ishibashi was employed extensively on “Hidden Close.” Thanks to him and the rest of Kelp (Takeshi Yamamoto and Sohta Setoguchi) for friendship and inspiration during a low point in life.
Thank you to Ryan Hall for giving me a platform to put these sounds out into the world and to Randall Taylor for filling the other side of that platform with vast sky noises.
Kelp speaks to me. Sad and experimental like Drowse. Musical freedom. I teared up during the chorus of "Falter" while watching them play last week: "you are changed." drowse
August creates slow, warm songscapes. He has released a wild amount of albums since starting the project last year and I'm in awe of his work ethic. Also, my friend Alex from Sprain plays on this. drowse
